Balancing full-time military service with academic study has been one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my life. Since joining the army at 16 as a combat medic, I found my passion for medicine. Since a young age, I knew I wanted to be a doctor, and providing medical care to serving soldiers solidified this for me. After 5 years of service, I became complacent in my role as a medic and sought to expand my clinical responsibilities and enhance my clinical skills. I was apprehensive when I applied for my access course, knowing I'd been out of education for over 11 years. That apprehension soon dissipated when I had my introduction call with my tutor and started to receive my learning materials.
I had two tutors through different modules of my course, but each tutor took the time to support me and my learning, taking the time to understand my knowledge of the subject thus far and develop it further. Not only did they help me confirm my understanding of the module contents, but they also challenged me to think beyond the course requirements and expanded my knowledge further. I’ve received two offers to study Medicine at prestigious universities. Before I started my course, I would’ve said this was impossible for someone like me.
When I began my Access to Medicine diploma with DistanceLearningCentre.com, I was just 17, having barely scraped through my GCSEs during the pandemic, a challenge made even harder by a long-term health condition that had me miss a large amount of secondary school. This made my educational experience even more difficult and ruled out my chances at studying A-Levels, the traditional route.
