I never thought that higher education was right for me. After taking a step back from A-Levels, which I was not passionate about, I never imagined going to university. I worked full-time in health and social care since I was 16, but I knew I wanted to pursue something more fulfilling – and that’s when I realised that nursing was the career for me. I knew that without higher education, I wouldn’t be able to achieve my dreams of becoming a nurse.

After some research, I found that DistanceLearningCentre.com would be the perfect fit for me. I started the course in February; I needed to complete the course by October in order to go to university. Although I was going to be working on a tight deadline, the course offered full flexibility to work around my schedule and complete assignments at my own pace. I had to make some sacrifices in my personal life, but I knew the end result would be worth it.

In just 5 months, I was able to finish my course with 45 distinctions. Not only did I achieve my diploma, the course also helped me gain organisation skills, independence and resilience, which are key skills that I have applied to university and my nursing career. I’m now 6 months into university and managed to achieve 100% in my first assignment. I’ve just started my first placement in a hospital ward, and I couldn’t be happier with the decision I made to start this course. I have worked as a care assistant within the care industry for 10 years now, and have been interested in becoming a nurse in the last 5 years. I didn't do very well at school and fell pregnant with my first child at the age of 17, which became challenging in seeking work. I am now a mum of 4 children, 2 who are autistic, and I have worked really hard at my current workplace in getting support from my manager and training manager in being able to get on the first steps of training to become a nurse.

I decided to enhance myself and my career by pursuing further education, and I can honestly say I have enjoyed every minute of learning with DistanceLearningCentre.com. 

I was anxious to begin with, as I wanted to ensure that I gave enough time to learn and achieve the best grades possible to gain admission into university, while working as a Dental Nurse. However, after some conversations with my tutor and understanding the course structure, my nerves were calmed, and I gave each topic my best effort. The course materials were well structured and understandable, with loads of information to complete assignments, alongside further independent research. I utilised both of my tutors' amazing advice and feedback from every assignment, helping me achieve my desired grades. I am forever thankful, as I truly believe that I could not have done this without their help throughout the course, as they provided me with as much information and support as possible. The webinars provided were one of my most valuable resources to aid my learning process, ensuring I understood what was needed to complete the assignments to a distinction level. 

Studying while working, alongside suffering from fatigue due to hypothyroidism, was a struggle at times, and I did have to ask for extensions from time to time, but my tutors were both fantastic with their quick responses. The course's flexibility allowed me the time I required to finish each assignment, and developed my time management skills as I was able to finish the course ahead of time. 

During the course, there have been ongoing family illnesses, and I have experienced some personal difficulties, as well as my little dog developing health problems and alopecia, which created some financial struggles due to veterinarian bills. I endeavoured to keep going to finish the course and prove to myself that I could do it. I am so proud of myself that I was able to do just that, despite some of the challenging circumstances I faced. 

The Facebook group created for students was also a brilliant tool for aiding my studies, and I made sure to use it whenever necessary. I asked for advice or clarification from students on similar courses to mine, greatly developing my understanding throughout the course. I ensured that I returned the favour as I often helped other students with their assignments from my own experience and knowledge of the course topics whenever possible. 

I achieved my desired grades, which I could not have done without the support from my tutors and fellow students. I still cannot believe I achieved all distinctions in two subjects that were not necessarily my biggest strength, especially biology, which I had previously dropped out of in college, as I did not understand it. I could not be happier! I have thoroughly enjoyed studying and hope to continue with further education, which I now feel prepared for, thanks to the support provided by DistanceLearningCentre.com and my fantastic tutors.
