I reached at the point of my life that I wanted to pursue more education, study and enhance myself academically. At first, I was very nervous to think how would I be able to learn online, understand study topics, and get all the help whilst working full time.

I am the mother of three beautiful children. As a mature student, I began my Access to HE Diploma for Nursing and Midwifery with DistanceLearningCentre.com; it was the first big step to returning to study and pursuing my goal of becoming a nurse and hopefully pursuing midwifery. It felt like the hardest thing to do. Whilst working in the fitness industry as an exercise instructor, I soon realised that I had a specific interest in training clients who were living with long-term health conditions. This interest encouraged me to focus on gaining specialist qualifications that allowed me to work in a clinical setting, and work alongside experienced healthcare professionals.
Although I enjoyed my role as an instructor, I soon realised that my exercise qualifications would only take me so far, and in order for my career to progress, I would have to consider Higher Education. Due to my busy work schedule, working unsociable hours, and family life, I knew that remote learning was the only option for me to achieve my goal, therefore the distance learning method seemed to be the perfect solution.
Before enrolling in the Access to HE course, admittedly I was terrified. It had been over 20 years since been in full-time education. Although my experience at school was tolerable and I achieved average grades, my diagnosis of dyslexia made learning extremely challenging. Nevertheless, I took a leap of faith, applied for my chosen course, and soon came to the realisation that I needn’t have worried. From day one my tutor supported me, alleviated any concerns, and any queries were immediately addressed.
At the beginning of the course, I admit that I had completely underestimated how challenging it would be to juggle work, and family life, yet still find time to study. However, my tutors where extremely patient and understanding. They encouraged me every step of the way, which helped to keep me motivated. Even when I’d beat myself up about not working through the units fast enough, or I’d put myself under unnecessary pressure, my tutors completely understood that life gets in the way sometimes, and reassured me to keep ploughing on.
I have now completed my Access to HE course, and I can safely say that it’s one of the best decisions I have ever made, and holding this qualification has already opened up so many opportunities. I have improved in both confidence and academic ability, and have achieved something I didn’t think was possible.
Although my journey with the DistanceLearningCentre.com hasn’t finished yet, as I want to gain further qualifications, I am really looking forward to the journey ahead, and hope to apply for university in the near future.
