After battling Anorexia Nervosa, multiple physical health conditions and my mental health for many years as a professional dancer, I left intensive eating disorder treatment and desperate to finally do the Psychology degree I have always dreamed of, however I truly didn't believe this was possible for me. I always wanted to study something related to psychology and forensic science and for this reason I moved to the UK. Facing some problems at the beginning I chose to study some courses in college, but after 4 years in college I realised that this is not what I wanted to do, so I wanted to apply to the university. I realised that it was impossible for me, because of the missing degrees I had, so I chose this course. I was a little scared of learning through online platforms, having experienced of pandemic classes and I didn't think that I would ever be able to get stable information through online, but this course proved the opposite.

Last year I applied to medicine and received offers from different universities across Scotland, including the university I had always wanted to attend. Unfortunately, during my exams, I faced some personal difficulties which meant I didn’t perform as well as I could. When results day came around in August I missed out on the grades needed to confirm my place by just one mark. I appealed my results in the September appeal window but no changes were made to my grades. I also didn’t have a backup choice and clearing was very limited as it was mid-September and most university places had been taken. So, then I tried resitting exams, but most medical universities didn’t accept resits. I even tried applying to local colleges that ran access courses but I wasn’t eligible for any of them as I was too young. It was a challenging time for me, every path I tried to take just led me to a dead end. I didn’t know what to do and it was horrible.
After emailing universities and asking what their advice would be for me, I was sent a link to a website page about access courses they accepted. Through this I found DistanceLearningCentre.com and after looking at their website, seeing all the courses they offered and reading about the positive things past students had written, I knew I had to study with them. I enrolled immediately, it was straightforward and I was allocated a tutor in no time. The induction call I had with my tutor cleared my worries about being able to reapply to medicine completely and it made me excited to learn once again.

The assignments themselves were enjoyable with a variety of question types and I loved that they were tailored around medicine. Through completing the assignments, I also learnt how to conduct research, reference and shape my answer depending on command words in the question, skills that I had not learnt while at school. I enjoyed examined assignments the most. They were so much less stressful than school exams as the preparation materials were amazing, especially the mock exams. I completed my diploma in about a year and throughout that whole time, my tutor was so supportive and made sure that I stayed on track for moderation. They were there for me even during holidays and I was comfortable to ask them any question I had and they were always so helpful. I would be excited for my tutor’s marksheets as they always provided quality feedback that encouraged me and highlighted areas for improvement, allowing me to improve my work each time. Truly they were amazing and I could not have done as well without them.
I reapplied to medicine this year and have been offered a place at my dream university again! This time last year I thought that was impossible.
