After making the huge jump to go back into education after 15 years, it was the best decision I had made. This was a lot for me to take on all while I’m a mother of 3 young children, I work a full-time job and we had just moved into a new house, but the time felt right so my journey to becoming a social worker was just about to begin.
Everyone was so helpful from the first email I sent to completing my Access to HE Diploma. I have never found learning easy due to suffering from dyslexia which makes learning a lot more difficult for me but I’m very thankful for the tutors who helped me achieve my course in just over 4 months, the patience they showed, the understanding and the extra support they gave me was outstanding, I couldn’t have achieved my course with the high grades I got in such a short amount of time without them.

After leaving comprehensive school with few useful qualifications (as did the majority), I managed to navigate through life with not much of a plan but with reasonable success in comparison to peers without ever needing said qualifications until I was at a crossroads in my work life in my early forties. A brief flirtation with the idea of retraining surfaced but quickly faded with the numerous challenges of loss of income, carving out sufficient time to study with the multiple responsibilities of a toddler, a teenager, ageing, ailing parents and a husband who spent weeks working away (lack of confidence also played a part).
I took an administration job in a school which neatly fitted around family and caring commitments, a few different avenues along the way and I am now in my mid-fifties thinking I would stay in my current role, pottering along until retirement and then perhaps take an Open University degree as a hobby. Then a chance comment by a friend coupled with the shock of ‘empty nest syndrome’ set me thinking and jolted me out of my ‘it’s too late for me, I’ve run out of time now’ mindset. I started researching access courses and concluded that the best reviews and value for money was DistanceLearningCentre.com. I signed up to an Access to Science Higher Education Diploma with a view to apply to study Diagnostic Radiography at University.
The course prepares you really well for higher level study with essay writing skills, support preparing a personal statement, research projects which appeal to universities, adhering to word counts and referencing skills. The introductory modules that don’t contribute towards the final grade are really helpful in getting you into academic study, gauging the level you are working at and what you need to improve on before embarking on the graded modules.
The tutor responded rapidly to any request for help or clarification and the offer of a weekly tutorial was always there with additional phone calls if needed. Overall, the communication was excellent and the feedback and marking for the modules was detailed, constructive and prompt. The course materials were comprehensive but I believe not sufficient on their own to achieve the higher grades. Wider reading of textbooks and articles, this is recommended by DistanceLearningCentre.com anyway, is needed to support them. However, this process of researching and gathering information from differing sources helps to embed the knowledge and understanding enabling you to craft detailed answers to achieve the higher grades and create the skills needed for higher academic study.
I would thoroughly recommend DistanceLearningCentre.com courses; the competitive price, the flexibility and being able to study online and see how you get on whilst still working before burning your bridges in full time education is invaluable. However, don’t underestimate the time and commitment it takes, but if you can stick at it the courses offered are ideal to improve your qualifications, career prospects and self-confidence.
I attained, beyond my expectations, two offers to study for a BSc in Diagnostic Radiography at University. I cannot stress how thankful I am for having been able to study with the DistanceLearningCentre.com. Education has always been difficult for me as I've constantly struggled with my mental health; I am extremely grateful for the support I have received from my tutors, especially during more turbulent times.

Following the completion of my GCSEs I sought to continue forwards and complete my A levels. Unfortunately, however, I was forced to withdraw from secondary education due to mental health related conditions. Since then, I have been on a long road to recovery, that has now concluded with DistanceLearningCentre.com.
After 5 years out of education, DistanceLearningCentre.com reinstated the confidence needed to pick up where I left off, finally achieving my level 3 qualifications with an Access to Higher Education Diploma.
In the beginning, I admit I personally was somewhat skeptical of how an Access Course would hold up against conventional A levels, but do not doubt - with the additional aid and support of my tutor, I was able to achieve distinctions in all my units. I did the Medicine Access Diploma and have since received an offer from Bristol University for Veterinary Science. Through studying with the Distancelearningcentre.com, within the space of one year, I have been able to complete both an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Radiography and a level 2 Functional Skills - English course. As a result of completing both courses, I was successful in application for a fully funded Diagnostic Radiographer Degree Apprenticeship position of which I am now fully enrolled and proudly studying at the University of Exeter.

Subsequently, much to my own surprise, I was able to achieve much higher grades than required by the university for the apprenticeship program.
To provide a brief overview of my story, for the past 7 years, I have worked for an emergency ambulance service in various roles, each playing a vital position within the chain of emergency care. Whilst being proud of this career, I wanted to make a change and the area of radiography along with the science and precision that comes with it has always been a personal interest of mine.
Despite my keen interest, at the time I didn't believe it was possible to make the career change. This was due to me not having the correct qualifications and my duties as a father preventing me from attending further education. After reading the other student testimonies online I decided to bite the bullet and enroll on the Access to HE Radiography Diploma. I can safely say this was the best decision that I made!
