The opportunity arose for me to apply for an apprenticeship through work. However, as I hadn’t studied since I was 18, I needed to complete an access course first. I went into it thinking I’d be ok with writing essays etc., however, it soon became apparent it wasn’t going to be as easy.
The first module took me a long time to start. I just could not think how to write about myself. All of my dates were set on my ILP and I was fast approaching the first deadline. I only allowed myself 7 months to finish the whole course, my tutor advised me this would be a challenge but was achievable.
I was working full time, caring for my dad who was palliative and caring for my grandparents both of whom in their 80s. I love to challenge myself and I was determined to succeed at this challenge. I had to be so strict with my planning and timings and if I said I would study for 2 hours then I studied for 2 hours. I never missed a deadline, or needed an extension, I was actually ahead of all of my target dates. I asked for support from friends and colleagues sometimes just to help me get on track and once I started a module I was disciplined and completed it. Some modules were harder than others, and I was fortunate enough that my tutor was incredibly supportive and helped me achieve all of my goals.
For anyone considering an access course, go for it!! If I can do it then anyone can. I’m so proud that I was able to gain the qualification and I’m now moving onto my next challenge- UNIVERSITY! With being organised and excellent time management, it was achievable to work full time and study alongside.

Before I enrolled onto the Access to Physiotherapy course in DistanceLearningCentre.com I was a trained dancer/actor making taking up another career in a stable, interesting and future-proof field related to my passion and expertise. Before studying with DistanceLearningCentre.com I was working in an office job and had become too scared to pursue my goals, especially as a mature student. Over lockdown I decided to take the risk and was recommended this course by a university. I did an Access course in Radiography.
I have just completed my last assessment and I am hoping to go to university this September to study Diagnostic Radiography. DistanceLearningCentre.com was great and the course was easy to follow. Before starting this course, I had very little to show from college in terms of A-levels. I didn't know what I wanted to study or what path to take in life, and so I took a break from education to work full time. This was great short-term for the money, but I knew deep down I wanted to progress in a rewarding career, especially in healthcare.
I came across DistanceLearningCentre.com online, and saw the medicine course and instantly applied! My experience has been incredible; the modules are in-depth, well-structured and highly interesting. My tutor was very understanding and helpful; I worked full time alongside completing this course, and so I knew it was for me as I could complete it at a time that suited my shift patterns and lifestyle.
I am now on a reserve list at Cardiff University to potentially study Dental Hygiene! This course has allowed me to get the equivalent A level grades needed to take on a university course or apprenticeship, and has opened a door of opportunities.
