I decided I wanted to change my career and to go into Physiotherapy but after researching colleges I realised that I had to have an Access Diploma to get a place, this is when the DistanceLearningCentre.com came to light. I found it straight away and applied.
I knew I had to do my Maths again which I found quite difficult, but with the help from my tutor who rang me every week and set me deadlines, I managed to understand and I actually found Maths enjoyable. To get a bit extra support my dad joined in to.
My Biology was my next subject in which once again my tutor was there at a drop of an email and my phone calls were regular, these were arranged around me since I was working full time. My tutors offered me extensions if I needed them as they knew how hard it was to balance work and studies.
Psychology was my last subject and the thought of that, and the amount of detail which is involved was a bit terrifying, but once again with my tutor, she made me feel at ease and gave me support and help when I needed it. This was done by replying to all emails in which I sent and explaining things and also reassuring me about my work. She gave me pointers to achieve the grades I needed.
I decided to change my career to Podiatry, and the tutors were really supportive and explained that this qualification would also get me on to the Podiatry course for which I was very grateful. Undertaking an access course in Law with DistanceLearningCentre.com to study a law degree at university, was one of the best decisions I have made.
When I started the course, I thought that I would not be able the finish it because of the intensive reading, assessments and exams. I met Paramedics through working in a GP surgery and was always in awe of them and had the utmost respect for what they did. I aspired to help in the way they did, providing emergency care on the frontline. I didn't achieve A levels, and this was an entry condition of the University degree.
I decided to sign up with DistanceLearningCentre.com as that would enable me to continue working full time and I could complete the course at my own pace. I began the Access to Paramedicine course in mid-October and applied for University in December. I was invited for interview and was given a conditional offer of a place at University providing I achieved distinctions in the access course. I completed the course in early May and had achieved distinctions for every graded unit!
There were times when I felt the course was too difficult and would never end but encouragement from my tutors helped me through and I will now be starting a BSc (Hons) Paramedic Practitioner degree this September at The University of Plymouth. After having spent the majority of my teenage years ill with my mental health, in and out of hospital, and having missed several years of education as a result, I thought that my chances of achieving academically and going to university were over. I'd lost all confidence in myself and didn't feel prepared to start college, nor would I have been able to fit it around my circumstances. I was completely disheartened by all of this as after everything I had been through, I wanted nothing more than to be able to use my experiences to help others in the future as a nurse. I just felt hopeless.
It wasn't until I came across DistanceLearningCentre.com that I came to the realisation that maybe I still did have a chance of accomplishing my goals. After doing some further research, I knew without a doubt that both the expertise and flexibility of DistanceLearningCentre.com would be able to provide me with the assistance and support to secure a Diploma in Health and Social Care in order to start my journey to becoming a Mental Health Nurse, whilst being able to fit it around my life and continue working on my recovery.
When I began the diploma I really started to panic about what I had committed myself to. Was I ready? Was I capable? What if I wasn't able to manage the assignments? How would I stay motivated? There were so many questions running through my head making me doubt my decision. However, with self-motivation, determination, hard-work, and the support of my tutor(s) I can hands down say that starting the Access Course was one of the best decisions of my life. I loved getting back into learning and studying again, putting my head down and working on topics that I enjoyed knowing that I was achieving something and taking steps towards a positive future. Though this Diploma had its challenges and difficulties, I got stuck in and refused to give up trying. 5 months later I had completed the course.
I can not go without saying that I would never have completed my Diploma with the grades I did if it was not for the incredible support from my tutor. I was consistently provided with clear advice and guidance that also encouraged me to take my own initiative and believe in my abilities more. We would look at both my areas of strength and weaknesses in order to develop a good idea on how I can continue improving and working to the best of my ability. I can't thank my tutor enough for the continual support and faith she had in me that aided me in getting where I am today. I've developed upon and learnt so many new skills during my time studying with DistanceLearningCentre.com and am thrilled to have now been given the opportunity to begin my degree in September in Mental Health Nursing at Bangor University.
