Approaching 40, and with a husband and 4 sons, I thought it was about time I did something for me. Working 32 hours a week as a therapy assistant, I knew occupational therapy was for me. I searched the internet for the best solution, which was to undertake a flexible Access Course, that fitted around work & family life. DistanceLearningCentre.com had that course. I contacted the University I wished to attend to check if the course was suitable, and it went from there.

I completed it in 10 months, and was able to get the 33 Distinctions needed for the course. It has been hard at times, but its about remaining focused on the overall long term goal. The Facebook page was extremely helpful, both with support and advice from fellow students, but also information about topics/units from other students and what resources they found useful. I won't lie, I am enjoying all my spare time currently, before uni starts in September.

The course worked for me, it's about having good time management and being disciplined. Having a supportive family for those crucial deadlines were a big help too. The tutors from DistanceLearningCentre.com were fab, they gave encouragement, and reminded me to stay positive. I knew that they were always at the end of an email if I needed them. It can be done! I work as an Emergency Care Assistant in the Ambulance Service; my natural progression would be to be a paramedic. To do this, I needed to complete the Access course to Higher Education in Paramedicine in order to fulfil the criteria and apply to University.

This was a great course as it enabled me to study alongside my full time job as I fitted the study around my shifts. The help and support of my tutors was always on hand. I am now in a position to apply to Portsmouth University to commence my Paramedic studies! (Jun 2018)

Being a mum of two and working full-time meant that, due to time constraints, I could not attend classes at a local college. Studying via DistanceLearningCentre.com meant I could plan my own work, study when I wanted to and know that the support of my individual tutor is only an email or a phone call away.

I also received help and assistance with my UCAS application to ensure the application process went as straightforward as possible. I was pleased to achieve the required number of distinctions and secure a place for adult nursing degree with the University of Portsmouth.

My road to becoming a nurse began with the help of DistanceLearningCentre.com and it is something I will always remember. (Jun 2018)

I would recommend it to anyone as I preferred it greatly to mainstream education. My next goal is to attend the University of Hertfordshire in September! (Jun 2018)

Enabled me to submit my UCAS application and personal statement with real confidence - Joy O'Gorman

Joy O'Gorman

The DLC Access course into nursing provided me with a vital passport into University as a mature student. The tick box for me was being able to learn at my own pace, beginning any time of year (January 2018) and fitting study around work. My goal was to finish by the end of May 2018 for June moderation, so I could start university in Sept 2018; it was a big ask, but I did it!

The first modules, self-development and applying to university enabled me to submit my UCAS application and personal statement with real confidence. The course really helps you step by step achieve what is needed to apply. Within ten days of my application, I had been invited to interview! This along with tutors positive and helpful feedback on my first assessments inspired me to crack on. Emails with queries were answered same day and each tutor enabled me to move through each module with growing confidence.

It was a conditional offer from my university that I acquire the 60 credits needed, for a place, but to be honest even if it wasn't, I would recommend doing the Access course as it really does give you good grounding. During my university open day (March 2018), a second-year nursing student told us that her peers who had gone through Access courses were better able to cope with the degree requirements, especially in biology and referencing, she struggled but was getting there.

My university advised I do an access course and once I found DistanceLearningCentre.com online, where I could study, while I worked, that was it, full speed ahead. I've now finished with well above the required distinctions and merits needed and have three months to relax (relatively speaking) before I start university in September to fulfil my bucket list of becoming a nurse.

Thank you to DistanceLearningCentre.com and all the team for a great pathway into university. I am so excited to begin this new chapter! (Jun 2018)
