My 1st stepping stone to a fulfilling and rewarding career and life - Jaco Ferreira

Image of Jaco Ferreira

Since I was a young boy I had a dream; a dream to become a proper nurse one day, help people, make the ill better, and with the help of the DLC team my dream is now becoming a reality.

In 2011 I enrolled in the Access to HE Diploma (Nursing, Midwifery and Health Professions) course provided by DistanceLearningCentre.com. I worked full-time and my father sadly passed away just as I started, things were difficult. However, my tutor encouraged me to keep going, to believe in myself and I managed, with her support, to successfully complete the course in 2012. It is now 2015 and I am about to enter stage 3 of the BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult) course at Plymouth University which I am really enjoying.

The end is in sight. I am getting closer to becoming the qualified nurse I always wanted to be, able to help those is need, making those who are ill better, and supporting their families.

Thank you DistanceLearningCentre.com ... my 1st stepping stone to a fulfilling and rewarding career and life. (Writing in August 15)

It's a fantastic, personal and supportive learning environment - Katie B

I just wanted to offer some words of wisdom and advice from someone who has taken the Access to Nursing course and is now a 1st year student nurse!

Firstly I want to say how much I appreciate DistanceLearningCentre.com, it's a fantastic, personal and supportive learning environment and I would recommend them to anyone.

The course sets you up beautifully for the modules involved in a nursing degree especially science based subjects. One of my first modules is Introduction to Life Sciences and it is intense! We have six weeks to learn; the organisation of the body, the skin and temperature regulation, the musculoskeletal system, the heart, blood vessels and the lympathic system, the respiratory system, the renal system, gastrointestinal system, nervous system, endocrine system and the reproductive system.

We had one lecture on each subject and two lectures (in this module) a week. Maybe some uni's are different but I would imagine its very similar. That is a lot of work. I am quickly learning that my DistanceLearningCentre.com work was absolutely vital and I'm miles ahead of those that haven't done science since school. So learn it now while you can, enjoy it and appreciate the time you get to learn it! Please don't let this put you off, I'm trying to help you see just how relevant the course is.

Other current modules are Practical Skills which involves working in a lab and learning skills such as taking someones vital signs and learning how to give injections. We also do Theories and Practices of Nursing which is about nursing models, assessment tools and research. There is a maths exam in january so we have weekly sessions on this too.

There is a lot of work and we are currently already sitting mock exams for our exams which take place in January. I go out to placement at UCLH at the beginning of November and I cannot wait!! If anyone has any questions about DistanceLearningCentre.com, the application process for uni or the adults nursing course itself then please ask, I would be happy to help.

I am having the time of my life! Living in halls is incredible and finally studying for my dream career is all I have wanted for a long time. So persevere because you will get there. (Nov 15)

I was impressed with their track record - Tasha Widdowson

I suppose my journey towards an Access to Higher Education Diploma began when I was 14. I became severely unwell, leaving me unable to attend school or even home-study; so I could not achieve any school qualifications. Several years later, when I was well enough to consider studying, I decided that an Access to Higher Education Course would suit me better than A-Levels. I chose DistanceLearningCentre.com as the course provider because I felt that they had a wider course selection than any of their competitors, and I was impressed with their track record.

I have a passion for healthcare and management, I therefore chose the Access to Health and Social Care Professions course, hoping this would open up opportunities for my future. Having had a previous bad experience from a different home-studying company I contacted DistanceLearningCentre.com's student support hoping for some reassurance that I would not go through the same disappointment again. The following day (August bank holiday!) I received an email from one of the Executive Managers, who offered me the comfort I needed to be able to carry on with confidence.

As the course progressed my academic skills were reawakened and my confidence in my intellectual ability grew. I thoroughly enjoyed studying new subjects and researching topics that I would not have considered interesting before starting the course! I was given advice on how to apply to university, and have since been given an offer to study my chosen degree - something that, for so long, had been a distant dream.

I would like to thank: the Student Services who answered my questions while I was trying to ascertain whether DistanceLearningCentre.com was for me; the Executive Manager who took the time to help me find confidence in the programme; and my wonderful tutor, for steering me down the right path during my assignments and for always being only an email away if I need some help and support.

To anyone who is considering enrolling, I would really encourage you to do so - you won't regret it! This access course has provided me with the opportunity to build my confidence, as well as my academic prowess, and has given me the chance to pursue my dream career. (Jun 16)

Given me a new confidence it has also ignited a passion for learning within me - David Lockhart

I knew I wanted to retrain and become a nurse but with so many years out of education and worries about the expense and time it would take me to gain the additional qualifications to gain a University placement I continually hesitated.

After reading about DistanceLearningCentre.com I decided to take the leap and I couldn't be happier. I enrolled on the HE Access to Nursing Diploma and studied across a year and a half.

Completing the course was one of the most difficult things I have ever done, balancing studies, family and work was very hard but my appointed tutors proved invaluable. They were always on hand to provide support and guidance and were very understanding of the difficulties that people face while completing additional learning. The modules and assessments were detailed and informative and presented in a way that was clear and concise.

Not only has my achievements with DistanceLearningCentre.com given me a new confidence it has also ignited a passion for learning within me and I am now moving into the next stage of my life with excitement and enthusiasm. (Jun 16)

I really did enjoy the course from the beginning to the very last day. All assessments were very interesting and the course materials very helpful. I enjoyed the Biology and Psychology the most.

I would recommend the course to any one who works full time as its flexibility allows you to achieve your goals. I would like to thank my tutors for their help and support.

Thanks to the Access Course, Biomedical Science, I have now received a place at my chosen University and will be studying Human Bio-science, starting this September. (Jun 16)
