Word count for global warming essay

Cab anyone advise me as to whether direct quotes are counted in my word count? Or is it just the actual essay base that you count and leave out the quotations?

direct quotes shouldn't be counted as part of your word count. think about using ... to cut out bits of quotes that don't actually aid your essay too

You should really try to stick to it - it is good practice (which is what this assessment is all about). If you do go over, then you will be allowed 10% (so 1100 words) without being penalised. If you are still over, remember that quotes aren't counted, and then if you're still over, you'll have to be a bit ruthless in your editing...
