Short Courses

Distance Learning Centre Certificate of Achievement

Who are Short Courses for?

Short Courses are adaptable and flexible so students can study as many or as few Modules as they wish. They can be achieved entirely by distance learning. You don't even need to decide how many to study at the beginning of the course, so you can build onto your Certificate over a period of time.

  • Professional Training
  • Employers can use Short Courses for Staff Development
  • You may be looking to develop your career or go for a promotion
  • You may wish to broaden your knowledge and skills
  • You may wish to use to to test out whether a particular career change is right for you

What can you study?

You can study a combination of any Modules from any Access pathway for a DLC Short Course.

Modules are available from a range of subject areas: Biology & Health, Law, Psychology & Social Science, Social Work, Teaching & Education. There are also generic Modules available in English, IT, Maths, Statistics & Research Methods.

See full details >>> of all the Modules available.

What are DLC Short Courses?

Our Short Courses are made up from the Modules which we provide as part of our Access Diplomas.

The only difference between the Short Courses and Unit Accreditation is that for Short Courses, we assess and internally verify your work, leading to a Distance Learning Centre Certificate of Achievement. With the Unit Accreditation, your work is also verified externally by our Awarding Body and an Open College Network Access to HE Certificate is awarded. This incurs significant addition moderation and certification costs but does lead to a nationally recognised qualification.

If you start a Short Course and want to move to the Unit Accreditation option, you can do this at any time, the only difference is the additional fee due at the end of the course.

Unit Accreditation vs. Short Course

If you do not specifically need a nationally recognised Certificate from an AVA (Accredited Validating Agency), you can create a short course in exactly the same way as you do with Unit Accreditation.

The work is at the same standard and the tutor service, course materials, internal verification and quality systems are exactly the same. Therefore, if it the the learning and knowledge which are a top priority, details of which will be listed on your Certificate, and you will have a portfolio of work to demonstrate this, the Short Course is a more economic option.

You can even leave the decision as to whether to treat your studies as a Short Course or Unit Accreditation until you are nearing completion.
